Church Pew Upholstery in Pennsylvania – A Recent Project
Savanna Williams-Bowlin
Zion Christian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had solid wood pews with no upholstery at all. Beautiful frames — hard sitting. Sharpe’s Church Interiors added foam and fabric to seats and backs so the congregation could keep the traditional look with real cushioning.
The Zion project
Leadership liked the wood character of the sanctuary. They didn’t want plastic-looking “new” furniture. They wanted padding. We recommended foam on seat and back, plus a durable fabric that fit the warm tones already in the room.
- Comfort — padding for longer services
- Look — fabric that sits with the wood, not against it
- Wear — materials built for weekly traffic
We worked with them on color and foam thickness, then installed on-site so the finish stayed consistent across every row.
What changed for the congregation
Hard seats became cushioned ones. The sanctuary still reads as Zion’s room — just easier to sit in. That’s the usual win when churches add upholstery to bare wood pews instead of ripping everything out. For more examples, see our pew refurbishing at St. Barbara’s in Powell, WY and pew upholstery and carpet in Glennville, GA, or learn more about our pew refinishing service.
How we typically run these jobs
- Consult — look at the pews, talk goals and budget
- Materials — fabric and foam samples; see also our interior design options if the whole room is in play
- Install — scheduled around your services
- Walkthrough — confirm the finish before we pack up
